outdoor patio furniture cushionsOnce you have the perfect patio furniture set for your backyard, you’ll need to know how to properly care for the cushions that come with it. Well-maintained patio furniture will last much longer, giving you your money’s worth and then some.

1. Deep Clean Monthly

No matter what type of fabric you have on your patio furniture, it’s a good practice to deep clean your cushions monthly. For most removable cloth covers, you can machine wash on the gentle cycle (check your tag to be sure). For acrylic or other non-machine-friendly fabrics, a hand wash in a big bucket or tub will do.

2. Spot Clean, As Needed

The key to lifelong cushion sustainability is regular maintenance. This means you will want to spot clean any spills or messes as soon as they happen. Usually, a wash cloth and a mild soap will do the trick. A scrub brush will do the job if you have a tougher stain. Harsh cleaning agents can ruin dyed fabrics, so be sure to read the manufacturer’s directions carefully if you want to use something besides soap and water.

3. Watch for Mold

Mold is a tricky fungus that many people don’t realize can affect their patio furniture. Concentrated bleach cleaners are an effective treatment for patio furniture cushions, whether you’re washing by hand or machine. Use lukwarm water to dilute the bleach (if doing it by hand; otherwise, add to washer) and a soft-bristle scrub brush.

4. Use a Water Protectant

Most patio furniture comes well-protected from water and sun. Over time though, your furniture cushions become less repellant and may need some help. There are a variety of applicable protectants at your local hardware or home improvement store that you can use to give your outdoor cushions the needed defense against outdoor elements. Be sure that what you buy is safe for your furniture though! It’s not a “one size fits all” market.
Good cleaning and upkeep habits will help maintain your furniture for a much longer time. Get in the habit of including your patio furniture (and cushions especially) in your deep cleaning routine. They can be overlooked a lot, but cushions need their own special care to keep providing you with optimal comfort.
